Good reading. It is an amazing story to me. It is amazing because if one tries to give a three sentence synthesis of this work it sounds like: Beautiful blonde daughter of a rich family fights again prejudice about her origin and gender to gain the support of her crews and fellow officers and finally defeats sexist abominable regime in space opera worthy final battle of giant dreadnoughts and what not, plus some stuff I can't say because it would be a spoiler. Except that this book is so. "Desperate fire is about the one thing you will not find inside" according to Segiroth. As a finale to the Theocracy vs Commonwealth this books offers a nice neat conclusion. My main issue though, is that on the space battle level there is almost no tension, with the disproportion between the sides at this point in the story. Kat may as well have been in stasis from about 50% of the book and the end result would have been the same, compared to the three previous stories in the series this was a big disappointment for me. The biggest tension is with the ground . "Lots of technical data and way too much detail of the war atrocites. Would have prefered this one to end the series." according to Mr. Thomas A. Mckewen. Lots of detail on the actions taken in the war but reads more like a text book rather than an adventure book. I must admit that by two thirds of the way through I was contemplating giving up on the series. The ending paves the way for further books in the series but I think the author might have been better off ending it here.If you like lots of technical information and detailed atrocities rather than strong characters and solid story line then you might love this book.
