Not his best, but some interesting commentary & insights Neal J. Pollock This is a short book--but then most of Parker's are. It isn't the usual double space, but it's only 224 pages long--and a very fast read. It does, however, provide a number of insights into his 3 main characters via the ploy of Susan and Spenser living together as well as Hawk revealing some of his background as a foil to members of ghetto gangs (esp. Major Johnson) and a bit on their relationship with Tony Marcus. Thus, it is an important book for the Spenser series. It also includes quite a bit of social commentary and obvious contrasts between/among. J.C. Barr said "Double Deuce" by Robert B. Parker, kindle version. This is not the best of Parker's Spenser books, but I only say that because the plot is a bit gritty for my taste. The plot is well crafted and there is a good deal of suspense, but Hawk in particular and even Spenser show a ruthlessness that I found hard to enjoy. While they had pity for those who were caught in the toils of evil people, we saw less of the gentler side of their natures and a callousness about killing which I found rather repellent. In spite of that, the book was worth reading, but I wouldn't say to a friend, "You must read it.". Maurice Grossman said Double Deuce. This is a good detective story about the ghettos and gang violence. There is lots of sociology attempts to explain how everything happens the way it does. The story is very interesting.

The plot is nothing new--it might be described as Spenser meets New Jack City --but Deuce 's snappy dialogue, timely, fast-paced action and quick characterizations make it classic Spenser. At the same time, Spenser's longtime relationship with psychologist Susan is escalating, and the two agree to live together. The drive-by shooting of a teenage mother and her child brings the duo into a confrontation with gangleader Major Johnson and his posse. .
