DESCRIPTION:
and I recommend it as a primer Miriam C. Jacobs This book really is helpful in translating Mussar to a language we can understand, and I recommend it as a primer. I am glad I read it. The problem with it is the author doesn't sufficiently interrogate his own point of view, and thereby makes assumptions the reader may not share - which possibly is not so much a problem as it is a pointer to a need for other books, other voices. If my first detailed exposure to Mussar had been a passage from this book, i am not likely to have pursued it. Instead, I came to this book via an article in Tablet Magazine by a rabbi named. Reader"Finally! A pragmatic approach" according to Reader27. This book is not a self-help book, nor is it a book on philosophy. It explains how ordinary people who hope to actually accomplish some of their worthy resolutions to improved actions might succeed at that. Year after year I have resolved that the next year I will become a better person, and I sincerely desired to do so. Yet my progress is so slow that I sometimes wonder if I have made. 7 said Finally! Even if you are not Jewish, this is a much better approach to improving your life than a thousand self help books because it takes the thinking of those sages who devoted their lives to character improvement and uses their words and ideas. For Jews who are unacquainted with the Mussar Movement, this is a welcome introduction.
Mussar is an illuminating, approachable, and highly practical set of teachings for cultivating personal growth and spiritual realization in the midst of day-to-day life. Here is an accessible and inspiring introduction to this Jewish spiritual path, which until lately has been best known in the world of Orthodox Judaism. The Mussar masters developed transformative teachings and practices - some of which are contemplative, some of which focus on how we relate to others in daily life - to help us to heal and refine ourselves.. The core teaching of Mussar is that our deepest essence is inherently pure and holy, but this inner radiance is obscured by extremes of emotion, desire, and bad habits. Our work in life is to uncover the brilliant light of the soul
