Scholars still debate whether Virgil supported or critiqued the empire's expansion; Aeneas' story might prompt new reflection now, when Americans are already thinking about international conflict and the unexpected costs of war. Recent translators (such as Allen Mandelbaum) put Virgil's meters into English blank verse. All rights reserved. Fagles chooses to forgo meter entirely, which lets him stay literal when he wishes, and grow eloquent when he wants: "Aeneas flies ahead, spurring his dark ranks on and storming/ over the open fields like a cloudburst wiping out the sun." A substantial preface from the eminent classicist Bernard Knox discusses Virgil's place in history, while Fagles himself appends a postscript and note

J. C. Beadles said Great modern translation. I had read some years ago Professor Fagles' translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey and loved them both. Fortunately, before his recent death, Fagles also translated Virgil's Aeneid. I wasn't very familiar with the Aeneid, but this translation brings it alive. I don't know enough Latin to be an independent judge of the translation, but experts attest that this is a great tran. ""A thing of beauty is a joy for ever" Keats" according to Ignotus. To have the Classics so close at hand we moderns must thank AMAZON and others. This Edition of the Aeneid takes us back to the time of John Dryden, the great English writer. He gives us a very polished translation of the Latin. Impossible to give us all the beauties and subtleties of the Latin yet it is a wonderful introduction to Virgil. An impelling story about the "Pius Aene. "Great overall" according to AmazonCustomer. Personally I think Virgil did a good job of showing he can write like Homer, even going so far as t parody characters from the Odyssey. Other than that he shows a lot of influence in glorifying the history of Rome so it was an enjoyable read in my opinion and a good classic to have.

Fleeing the ashes of Troy, Aeneas, Achilles’ mighty foe in the Iliad, begins an incredible journey to fulfill his destiny as the founder of Rome. His voyage will take him through stormy seas, entangle him in a tragic love affair, and lure him into the world of the dead itself -- all the way tormented by the vengeful Juno, Queen of the Gods. Ultimately, he reaches the promised land of Italy where, after bloody battles and with high hopes, he founds what will become the Roman empire.
