In The Hike, Magary takes listeners on a daring odyssey away from our day-to-day grind and transports them into an enthralling world propelled by heart, imagination, and survival.. Once he sets out into the woods behind his hotel, he quickly comes to realize that the path he has chosen cannot be given up easily. On a quest of epic, life-or-death proportions, Ben finds help comes in some of the most unexpected forms, including a profane crustacean and a variety of magical objects, tools, and potions. From the author of The Postmortal, a fantasy saga unlike any you've listened to before, weaving elements of folk tale and video game into a riveting, unforgettable adventure of what a man will endure to return to his familyWhen Ben, a suburban family man, takes a business trip to rural Pennsylvania, he decides to spend the afternoon before his dinner meeting on a short hike. At once bitingly funny and emotionally absorbing, Magary's novel is a remarkably unique addition to the contemporary fantasy genre, one that draws as easily from the world of classic folk tales as it does from video games. This was not the absolute best book I have ever written but it is definitely This was not the absolute best book I have ever written but it is definitely up there in terms of one of the best endings. Of course having read Magary's stuff at Deadspin and GQ over the years, and following him on Twitter and seeing his steady stream of RTs about the book, I had to order (as he said, "you must go full pimp" in promoting a book). It was even darker and more twisted than I would have imagined, but it still lacked a certain punch in some areas. One of. A good dose of quirkiness If I had to compare this novel to others, I'd say it was a mix of Alice in Wonderland, Dante's Inferno, and Gewgaws. Then add a touch of acid and a healthy dose of quirkiness! I enjoyed its quarks and style. It was definitely a speedy trip (I mean the acid kind.) If you're looking for a lifelong classic, maybe look elsewhere. If you're looking for a walk on the literary wild side, this is your book. Definitely not for the kiddies. Read "Gewgaws" if you want PG dimens. I was a little disappointed in the end Keith Matte this was an interesting read. I was a little disappointed in the end. Left me with not a lot of understanding the motive of the story, unless i missed something. I still give it 5 stars due the unique story and readability.
