DESCRIPTION:
Background notes are given for each song.. The book contains some 112 songs, familiar and unfamilar, some epigrammatic, most with tunes. The material is grouped thematically with songs about joining, training, soldiering, punishment, off duty, prisoners, under-fire and going home. A collection of British soliders' songs of the 20th century, impressive in range and scope
John W Stafford said What A Lovely War. Just what you'd expect form a book by Roy Palmer - easy to read, very interesting, lots of notes about the songs and some different songs than the usual collections. No shying away from the swear words that soldiers would have used either.
