gripping, fast-paced a story well told Winston J. Phillips Although it distressed me, this story, because it is so well written, held me in its ‘octopus-like tentacles’ for one sitting. I was saddened, more so because I realized that similar events reportedly occurred all over the South, and that the culture and emotions firing the story still exist today.The story is set in post emancipation NC, on a cotton growing Plantation run by Enoch Pope and his sons. It is a suspenseful horror novel that showcases the hard cruel reality of prejudice and the actions of bigoted individuals, but blends in revenge and the supernatural.Divided into three parts, the story revolves around the Pope plantation in North Carolina.
