What happened to make Pete Marino such a paranoid, self destructive, unlikable thug? Is there some new, albeit as yet unreported disease that explains what's happening to Lucy? A tumor on the pituitary gland?? Come. Not the Scarpetta we fell in love with Cheryl A. Horwath I used to love Patricia Cornwell's books. I bought hard copies and now am purchasing for my kindle and re-reading. The story line is passable, but the main characters have changed too much for my liking. Kay is more pompous than ever.Lucy belongs behind bars.Benton is simply therenothing remarkable about him. The only endearing character is Marino. I'm not sure anyone could work for this condescending know it all for long, let alone be in a relationship with her. Her character gets more and more unlikable and I think at times I need to start rooting for the perpet. not one sympathetic character in this book A Customer There is not one character in this story with whom I have any sympathy. What happened to Pete Marino, who, in my mind, was always a good guy who worked together with Kay almost seamlessly. Now, he is a miserable, mean SOB. Perhaps it's time to retire Pete. Also, Lucy, the niece - what a piece of shabby work. Can she ever get her head out of herself and actually relate to the real world?
