Mark Straka said Useful to a degree. Although the book makes no effort to approach Curtis Mayfield's idiosyncratic tuning or playing style, it still makes an effort to render it into a facsimile for guitarists who use standard tuning. It can do that much. And it uses tablature alongside the standard notation. Still, as always and with every transcription I have ever owned, there are better fingerings and voicings that you will have to work out for yourself. Much more useful than Hal Leonard's piano arrangements with generic chord boxes in their Best of Curtis Mayfield book.. Essential for Mayfield Enthusiasts who are are advanced guitarists. Makes the classic soul/funk master's unorthodox guitar playing style more accessible and understandable to advanced guitarists. This is true of those who are advanced with respect to their musical ear but not necessarily for those who aren't advanced with respect to their music theory comprehension. It does, however, strengthen a good guitarist's understanding with respect to Curtis's difficult-to-understand style, at least intuitively. The fact that the author of the book chooses to transpose the Mayfield songs contained in the book to standard tuning instead of Curtis's funky F# tuning variations illustrates this fact. In other words it's no. pretty good! I bought this book hoping to learn more about the elusive curtis mayfield guitar method. The book, however, is written for standard tuning, as opposed to the way he tuned his guitar (open tuning to the black keys of a piano). I don't read sheet music, and all the songs are in sheet music, but there are tabs as well. I just thought I would point those out for people looking to buy this product. So if you're looking how to play curtis songs in standard tuning, it's a good buy.
