TAS said Oh the heck with this novel, its a waste of time!. The author might have had a first rate survival story if he had just used common sense as the novel rolled out. However the plot just got more and more ridiculous. He guided his family hundreds of miles on bicycles finding food whenever it was necessary, a truck load here, a convenience store there. Just no problem! (When he found the truck loaded with food why the heck didn't he stock up enough for the entire journey?) They now encounter a small band of teens who come at them with guns blazing. He and a co-worker narrowly avoid dying when the plane they were to catch leaves without them . The power goes out, an old man opines about an EMP, and our protagonist is suddenly an expert on something he has never heard of before. They trek across Chicago to the nearest Sears, and the co-worker cuts his leg on a chain link fence, which results in his near death.
