I like good short fiction, but it often leaves me feeling that it is unfinished or that it went nowhere. I am glad to report that The VitalAbyss is a nice "fill-in-some detail" novella for readers of The Expanse series. I would not recommend it to someone who does not know the series.I am a big fan of the Expanse series, but two things struck me in this piece. First, the prose grabbed me in a number of places, which is not an aspect of the longer works that stands out in my mind. For example, the protagonist is remembering hi. Because of treatments given by Protogen, the employees he worked with did not see it as immoral or unethical to do research on humans.
