My story is full of both. For many of us this is our reality. Bottom line. But, for many of us, there are those one or two people that refuse to believe the diagnosis and deny the reality of the situation. We are caretakers and autism educators. I have searched far and wide looking for such a statistic. is diagnosed with Autism a year. The organization, Autism Speaks, has some helpful advice, as well as, countless other advocacy sites. It can end friendships. It took one text or one phone call to get relief from the constant chaos that we lived in. If you are where I was, please know that I see you. I validate your experience. It is horrible to have people close to you, whether family, friends, or those in your community, deny the life you live. I wish there was a statistic that said how many families have family members and friends who refuse to accept a child’s autism diagnosis--especially high functioning autism. I also had people in my life that denied what the doctors (yes, multiple doctors) had said and thought I was in some sick, twisted way making it all up to gain attention for myself. I had people in my life who would drop everything and support my family. Easier said than done, right?.
