DESCRIPTION:

An extraordinary firsthand account of the Battle of Midway by one of its key participants, timed to the 75th anniversary: American dive-bomber pilot "Dusty" Kleiss helped sink three Japanese warships (including two aircraft carriers), received the Navy Cross, and is credited with playing a decisive individual role in determining the outcome of a battle that is considered a turning point in World War II. On the first day of the Battle of Midway, Kleiss planted bombs on two Japanese carriers - Kaga and Hiryu - sinking both, and later, on June 6, he scored a direct hit on a Japanese cruiser, the Mikuma, which also sank. What a Great Book ! This is one of the best WW2 Books I have read in a long time. It is indeed about an 'Ordinary Man who Did Extraordinary Things' As a young man, I grew up entirely it seemed with WW2 veterans who served in various theaters and in different ways. Almost all of them were similar in that they were very reticent to recount details of their experiences, much less in self-praise. This book echoes the attitude of that generation. In style it reminds me very much of that plain American style used in US Grant's memoirs, which for me i. E said Fantastic Account. "Never Call Me a Hero" is an amazing story whose details are worth taking the time to discover. While Dusty Kleiss might not have wanted to be called a hero, his story earns him great respect from this reviewer. Readers won't only hear about his time in WWII, but also how his love for his future wife shaped his experiences during this time. I'm glad Dusty was fortunate to live so long and that his co-authors discovered his story and took it upon themselves to share it with the rest of us!. Terrific Read roger saunders Incredible, just incredible. Kleiss didn't want to be called a hero and it's easy to understand why but it's simply amazing there were so many people like him carrying out their duty without hesitation. Thankfully Kleiss, as probably the last surviving American pilot who was at the battle of Midway, was convinced to complete this memoir before it was too late. Miraculous that he survived the war as evidenced by the many close calls he experienced, some as a result of his own screw-ups and some as the result of enemy action.
