Minority pastors experience unique leadership challenges in majority culture congregations. Even though Jesus destroyed the dividing wall of ethnic and racial hostility and created a whole new humanity of equal privilege and dignity, the pervasive nature of racialized patterns in the American evangelical church undermines the influence and impact of minorities in leadership. In this qualitative research, I interviewed six minority pastors serving in predominantly white congregations in the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) to explore how they overcome leadership challenges unique to their particular callings and contexts. But there is hope for true gospel transformation. For some, their stories wouldn’t be complete without the courageous gospel-shaped leadership of their fellow white pastors. Increasingly, both majority culture congregations and minority pastors are seeking to labor together for the sake of the gospel in our racially divided communities. My hope is that all pastors, regardless of color, will begin to gain biblical, historical, cultural, and practical insights from these pages for their own callings and make a lasting gospel difference..
