He was, first and foremost, a teller of stories. He could tell stories better t. Not Sabatini, but a good attempt S.L.H. This was written after Chrichton's death, so I'm assuming that was the reason for my disappointment with it. It ends abruptly and the wrap up at the end seems like it was added by someone else. The writing was fine and I enjoyed the characters. The novel was well-researched though the ship and crew must have experienced every pirate cliche in this novel. That's not to say that their experiences weren't enjoyable. There were clever escapes and fights, brawls and duels enough. If you want to read some fine pira. Excellent read, authentically presented. Cannon A well researched work of fiction, Pirate Latitudes breezes through a story of piracy and revenge without bogging down in the tedium that some historical fiction can stumble into, and that is a very good thing. Set in Jamaica and the surrounding Caribbean, PL roots itself in the town of Port Royal with well drawn characters whose motivations and objectives are tinged with nobleness and greed all at the same time. The story moves at a nice pace: a pseudo legitimate privateer raid, capture and escape, and the
Hunter assembles a crew of ruffians to infiltrate the enemy island and commandeer El Trinidad, along with its fortune in gold. The Caribbean, 1665. Word in port is that the galleon El Trinidad is awaiting repairs in a nearby, heavily fortified, harbor. Port Royal, Jamaica is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. For Captain Charles Hunter, there’s a living to be made, and gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking. The raid is as perilous as the bloodiest tales of island legend and Hunter will lose more than one man before he even sets foot on foreign shores, where dense jungle and the firepower of Spanish infantry stand between him and the treasure With all the suspense that readers have come to expect from one of the best-loved authors of all time, Pirate Latitudes is an irresistible adventure of swashbuckling pirates in the New World, a classic story of treasure and betrayal.
And this is no typical pirate adventure, either: it’s actually a caper novel posing as a high-seas adventure. This new novel, found in manuscript form among his papers, will come as a bit of a surprise to many of his fans. Crichton keeps us in a constant state of suspense, never revealing quite what his hero, Captain Hunter, has up his sleeve, and the novel ends most unexpectedly. It is, of all things, a pirate novel. Don’t expect to see Jack Sparrow in this story of pirates of the Caribbean,
