DESCRIPTION:

But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable, and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety. A novel of breathtaking sweep and scope that spans five continents and six years and transports listeners from the jazz clubs of Paris to Krakow's most brutal prison to the ports of Northern Africa and the farthest reaches of the Siberian gulag, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the 20th century's darkest moment, the human spirit could find a way to survive and even triumph.. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. An extraordinary, propulsive novel based on the true story of a family of Polish Jews who are separated at the start of the Second World War, determined to survive - and to reunite. It is the spring of 1939, and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. "A Story Writ Large" according to sgweinb. I was looking forward to reading this book because my family too came from Radom. I had connected with Georgia when she was researching the book because I do the website on the town for those researching their ancestral roots. Curiosity fed my interest, but I was truly wowed by both her amazing story and her ability to tell it in such an engaging manner. I cared about each person and felt deeply invested in their survival. The book traces her family members from Radom across the world during the war as they each seek their path to survival. So many stories are told within one family-from the Radom ghetto, to digging a grave in the killi. I wish I could give it MANY more stars carilynp While only the second month into the year, I can say with certainty that Georgia Hunter’s debut novel WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES is my favorite book of the year. Definitely one of the books that I will cherish. It is not only a poignant story, written so eloquently and with such heart, but the fact that it is based on the true story of her family makes it that much more special. The book is about a family of Polish Jews who were separated during World War II and what became of them. At many times, this is a difficult book to read, as it should be, given the subject. But because it is so hard to read, all the more reason to do so.
