A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print, and has been adapted to film, opera, and other media.. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied but are principally the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and the Christmas stories of Washington Irving. The tale was pirated immediately, was adapted several times to the stage, and has been credited with restoring the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and somberness. A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens first published by Chapman and Hall and first released on 19 December 1843. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. The story tells of sour and stingy Ebenezer Scrooge's ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation after the supernatural visitations of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The book was written and published at a time when Britain was experiencing a nostalgic interest in its forgotten Christmas traditions, and at the time when new customs such as the Christmas tree and greeting cards were being introduced

"The cover looks nice online, but in person it screams cheap" according to Aunt Cassie. The story is a priceless classic. This edition is very cheaply made. The cover looks nice online, but in person it screams cheap. The cover is just high gloss cardboard. The pages are printed on cheap paper. The illustrations are small and indistinct. I was planning to give this as a gift but it was just too tacky. I ended up purchasing the Barnes and Noble faux leather bound version (also sold by Amazon - and for a lot less money). The B&N edition is beautiful. The cover is embossed with gold and silver, the edges of the pages are g. "BEWARE OF THIS BOOK - Abridged Version" according to Hug1. This is an abridged version of the classic Dickens novel, not the full text. I read quite a bit of it, thinking that I must have a faulty memory of the book, until I got too frustrated with having parts of the story just not there. It's a well done abridgement, but it is still not the full story. There is another free unabridged version available for your ebook and it played well on my Kindle Fire HDX. It has a plain cover, and it says that it is illustrated, but no illustrations came through on my Kindle. That's the book I recomme

Shinn, a well-known artist in his time, was a popular illustrator of newspapers and magazines whose work displayed a remarkable affinity for the stories of Charles Dickens, evoking the bustling street life of the mid-1800s. Though countless editions of this classic have been published over the years, this one stands out as particularly beautiful, nostalgic, and evocative of the spirit of Christmas. In the history of English literature, Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, which has been continuously in print since it was first published in the winter of 1843, stands out as the quintessential Christmas story. What makes this charming edition of Dickens's immortal tale so special is the collection of 80 vivid illustrations by
