DESCRIPTION:
The Genius of Apple and Jony Ive's Significant Contribution to its Success This book is a good companion to Isaacson's Steve Jobs. The book is well written and clearly reveals Apple's superior design culture. One that is admired and respected by other designers the world over. Interestingly it also touches on the influence good design has on those who purchase Apple products. The idea that people can be educated by influence through good product design is an interesting one. The book also describes in some detail how important good design education is to the manufactur. "A real page turner!" according to Oliver Twist. Like any excellent novels, this book is so impossible to put down! I am more than fascinated by his approach to the design process and the influences placed upon him as he grew up and studied the industrial design. In addition, it is more than a biography about Jony Ive; it also highlighted the tumultous challenges and hurdles of shifting the end result from engineering perspectives to design process as well as the difficult environment at Apple when the engineers and executives had a final say . Lots to like here I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Paired with "Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation by Jonathan Zufi" I feel I've earned a credit in Beginner's Design. There is a lot to like here - rich background on Ive's design philosophy - insight into Apple's marketing approach - some cool technical background on unibody and so on. (Kindle readers -> pictures in back on book.)Weakness is repetition. Example - the number of times we are told design is driving engineering is somewhat mind numbing.

One night, Jobs discovered a scruffy British designer toiling away at Apple’s corporate headquarters, surrounded by hundreds of sketches and prototypes. He shows us how Jony Ive went from an English art school student with dyslexia to the man whose immense insights have altered the pattern of our lives. “Different and new is relatively easy. Doing something that’s genuinely better is very hard.” —Jony IveIn 1997, Steve Jobs returned to Apple as CEO with the unenviable task of turning around the company he had founded. Along the way, Jony Ive has become the world’s leading technology innovator, won countless design awards, earned a place on the 2013 Time 100 list, and was even knighted for his &ld
