DESCRIPTION:
"More Like a Mentorship Than a Book" according to D. Hobby. I am at a loss for a quick way to describe Dan Winters' just-shipped book, Road to Seeing. That's because it defies nearly any category of photo book I have seen to date. It's nearly 700 pages long, and is far and away the deepest journey into the photographic process I have ever read. It includes technique, but in the context of the journey covered in this book technique is almost an afterthought. And appropriately so.Best way I . love, habit and joy Rodger Newbold I have a LARGE library of books. Photography is my profession, love, habit and joy. During my forty years in the business I had only heard a casual mention of the name Dan Winters. This book certainly gives life and form to Mr. Winters, but it exposes his fine work to a larger class of readers, students and others seeking a way to see. I had no expectations of this book. It sounded intriguing and I ordered it. You get what you pa. Scott Fillmer said Fantastic Philosophical Look at Photography. More than a book on photography, this was a philosophical look at a beautiful art and the history one person had. The journey was just a beauty of words and images. I have read so many books on photography, this one ranks right up there as one of the best. This one and Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography, which is a very different book, but both rank right up there as the best.
After beginning his career as a photojournalist for a daily newspaper in southern California, Dan Winters moved to New York to begin a celebrated career that has since led to more than one hundred awards, including the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography. Though this book appeals to the broader photography audience, it speaks primarily to the student of photography—whether enrolled in school or not—and addresses such topics as creating a visual language; the history of photography; the portfolio; street photography; personal projects; his portraiture work; and the need for key characteristics such as perseverance, awareness, curiosity, and reverence.By relaying both personal experiences and a kind of philosophy on photography, Road to Seeing tells the reader how one photographer carved a path for himself, and in so doing, helps equip the reader to forge his own.. An immensely respected portrait photographer, Dan is well known for an impeccable use of light, color, and depth in his evocative images. In Road to Seeing, Dan shares his journey to becoming a photographer, as well as key moments in his career that have influenced and informed the decisions he has made and the path he has taken
"This book should be on every photographer's nightstand, and you should read three or four pages of it, and look at five or six pictures in the portfolio every single day for inspiration and as a way to help you stay grounded, focused, and motivated as a photographer. Beautiful job, Dan Winters. This is a book for the ages, and it is really the book of the year…."
